Place Moulin Reservoir

Nature and villages

Bionaz

Holding a total 105 million cubic metres of water, Place Moulin Dam is one of Europe’s largest reservoirs. Created between the mountains of Bionaz during the 60s, this artificial lake has radically altered the aspect of the landscape.
However, the scenery above the dam, which measures155 m in height and 678 m in length that bars the valley, is stunningly dramatic.

The emerald green waters of Lake Prarayer, the pristine white glaciers of les Petites and les Grandes Murailles in the background, the lush, deep-green vegetation running down to the lake waters that sparkle with delightful colours in autumn, are an unforgettable sight.

A 5 km walk along a level track flanking the reservoir takes you to Prarayer mountain hut, but a more demanding itinerary leads up to Nacamuli hut (2,817 m) and Col Collon (3,114 m).
